Dr. Ahmed Bershawi

Dr. Akhavan earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He then completed an internship at University of California-Los Angeles County Medical Center, specializing in both psychiatry and internal medicine followed by a residency in anesthesiology at the University of California-Irvine. Dr. Akhavan also completed a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine from Loma Linda University Medical Center. After graduating from fellowship, Dr. Akhavan served as faculty for Loma Linda University. He later joined the University of California, San Diego Medical Center as an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine where he specialized in caring for heart and lung transplant patients, coronary artery bypass graft patients, and patients on ventricular assist devices.

Dr. Akhavan’s principal areas of expertise are volume status assessment using hemodynamic monitoring and bedside echocardiography in septic patients, patients with acute kidney insufficiency, and patients with acute congestive heart failure within the critical care setting. Additionally, he is presently investigating whether early tracheostomy in ventilator dependent patients decreases the incidence of ICU delirium, length of hospital stay, and time spent on mechanical ventilation.

Due to his unique expertise with sedation in the ICU, Dr. Akhavan is a frequent lecturer to physician groups across the country. Furthermore, he has served as a hospital consultant because he is highly regarded as an expert in sedation of mechanically ventilated patients and reducing the incidence of ICU delirium.
